Web Design Considerations for Business

For business owners, a website is one of the most effective means of marketing. A website is open 24 hours a day, can provide a lot of information and is accessible anywhere. A website is your front door; oftentimes it is the first interaction a potential customer will have with your business. With this in mind, it’s important that you get your site right and project the proper image or risk losing future customers. Here are some points to consider when developing your website:

Know Your Audience

Before writing your first word or starting the design, you need to have a full understanding of your audience. What is the average age of your customer? Where do they live? What are their interests? What is their income level? Once you have a clear understanding of your target audience, it will become your road map for content development.

Content

The content that you provide is the most important part of your website. The audience is coming to your site for information and answers. Your copy needs to read clearly and be grammatically correct. If your copy isn’t coherent the audience will get the perception that other areas of your business are the same way. If you are not a good writer, hire a copywriter or ask a friend who is good at writing to help. A good web page doesn’t have to be fancy; it should however be engaging and useful to the reader.

Design

The way your site looks is a direct reflection on your business. If your site has a lot of different colors, small fonts and looks unorganized your audience will judge your business on that fact. Use colors that go with your logo and place your logo in the center of the header or in the top left corner. Choose colors that will make your content easy to read while complementing your logo. Fonts are just as important, pick one or two different styles and consistently stay with them throughout your site. Your headlines should be in bold as it makes the information easier to read.

Navigation

To make your website truly effective it needs to be easy to navigate. Make it intuitive for your customers to find the information that they need. Have a navigation menu at the top or on the left side that is static so readers can always maneuver around the site whatever page they are on. Your information should be easy to find and broken into sub-headings.

Calls to Action

You want your audience to act, so make sure you have several calls to action that encourage them to take the next step. Your main goal is to have people request your service or purchase a product. Effective calls to action include:

  • Free Consultation or Estimate
  • Click to Learn More
  • Make an Appointment
  • Buy Now
  • Request a Quote
  • Register

Feature your call to action more than once, make it easy for them to contact you or buy.

Google’s mobile friendly update officially launched April 21, 2015. This means your site needs be optimized for all mobile devices. More and more people use their phones and tablets to search and buy on the Internet.
